We provide a Total Communication Environment

At Speaking Space our focus is on getting the environment right to support an individual’s communication and sensory needs, so that we can support them to learn and work towards their life goals. This includes making sure the physical environment is right, as well as the people supporting the individuals. We employ communication facilitators and focus on training them to have the skills to support each individual and their unique communication needs.

Speaking Space uses signing (Makaton), symbols, photographs, and speech to support all aspects of our day service.  This means we can help people understand and express themselves by using a variety of good communication strategies.  One of the reasons why we were awarded advanced status by the National Autistic Society is our excellent use of communication systems.

What will I learn?

Our main goal is for people to be as independent as they wish to be.  We also focus on developing self-confidence, social communication skills and friendship skills.  So, these are the four main areas in which you will learn. We can also provide groups focusing on relationships and sex if this is needed.

What groups can I join?

Our timetable changes 3 times a year and is based on what our service users want or need to learn.  You will expect to see some of the following: drama, music, cooking, art, storytelling, social skills, relationship skills, Makaton, and community engagement groups.

How will I know I’m improving?

When you start at Speaking Space, we will talk to you about your needs and goals and will agree some targets for you to work on.  We will meet with you regularly to see how this is going.

Service user feedback

Every year we conduct a review of the service we provide.
