Speaking Space day opportunity is a Total Communication environment for autistic adults and adults with intellectual disabilities. We do lots of fun activities which are focused on using all forms of communication needed such as signs or symbols. We are working towards independence and inclusivity in our local community.
Speaking Space is a Total Communication environment. This means that we support each individual to understand and express themselves by using a variety of communication methods including signing (Makaton), symbols, photographs and adapted language.
Most of the adults who attend our day opportunity (sometimes known as day service) are autistic or have an intellectual disability. Individuals attend Speaking Space if they would like support to develop their communication skills in order to work towards their life goals.
The main goal is to provide a Total Communication environment to support each member to develop their communication skills and work towards their life goals. We want all members to be as independent as they wish to be. We focus on developing self-esteem, social communication skills, friendship and relationship skills. We do this through fun group sessions, community engagement projects, volunteering and other activities such as our enterprise project and an annual performance!
When individuals start at Speaking Space, we talk to them about their goals and agree some targets to work towards. We then meet regularly to discuss progress.
We offer a range of activities throughout the day. We start each day with a ‘feelings check-in’ to support members to develop their emotional vocabulary using resources such as Talkabout and Zones of Regulation. Members then join a variety of activities such as drama, music, cooking, art, storytelling, social communication skills, relationship skills, Makaton, and community engagement groups. Every year we ask the members for feedback using a range of communication methods and use this feedback to plan our future groups.
Speaking Space is located in the charming town of Romsey, Hampshire, directly opposite the train station. Our central location gives us easy access to community facilities, which we incorporate into our day opportunity (sometimes known as day service) to promote inclusion.
Our day service base is at Fleming House in Romsey.
