Course overview
The aim of the course is to increase knowledge and skills around SLCN for those who want to take a lead on supporting communication in the classroom within their setting. This 4 day hybrid course includes 2.5 days of face to face training and 1.5 days of online training spread over the academic year. The core days provide an overview of receptive and expressive language and include practical strategies to use in the classroom. The participants can then choose online modules which are most relevant to their setting to further develop their knowledge.
The course includes assignments, such as completing a communication audit and a communication checklist, as well as cascade training sessions. There will be lots of opportunity to share good practice and problem solve scenarios.
Day 1: Receptive Language
Content:
- An introduction to comprehension, including topics such as attention and listening, word level, vocabulary and memory
- Strategies and practical ideas to support comprehension in the classroom
- Assignments include completing part of a communication audit within your setting, a communication checklist and a cascade training session.

Venue: Speaking Space (Romsey) Ltd, Fleming House, Alma Road, Romsey
Tutors: This day will be delivered by 2 Speech and Language Therapists who specialise in working in schools.
Day 2: Expressive Language
Content:
- An introduction to expressive language, including topics such as method of expression, vocabulary, word finding difficulties and narrative skills
- Strategies and practical ideas to support expressive language in the classroom
- Writing a school action plan
- Assignments include completing part of a communication audit within your setting, a communication checklist and a cascade training session.

Tutors: This day will be delivered by 2 Speech and Language Therapists who specialise in working in schools.
Online Modules
Participants will choose 3 online modules from the following topics. The course facilitators will provide an opportunity during the core days to discuss and choose options. All courses will be delivered by 1 or 2 speech and language therapists and all will be delivered online:
1. Communication & Behaviour
This course will explore the link between communication and responsive behaviours. You will discuss causes of behaviours that challenge and hear about models & strategies to support a person’s communication.

Time: 1.00-4.00
2. Speech Sounds
An introduction to speech sound difficulties, including strategies and practical ideas to support young people.
Date: Thursday 30th January 2025
Time: 1.00-4.00
3. Social Communication
An introduction to social communication including topics such as: What is social communication?; Where do I start?; What do I do?; How do I demonstrate effectiveness?
Date: Thursday 13th February 2025
Time: 1.00-4.00
4. Total Communication
An introduction to using Total Communication to support individuals with complex communication needs. Learn how to use different communication methods and create a positive communication environment to maximise opportunities for communication
Date: Friday 7th March 2025
Time: 1.00-4.00
5. Sensory Integration
An introduction to what sensory integration is, an overview of the eight senses, and how to recognise students with sensory integration differences. You’ll also have an opportunity to explore strategies that can be implemented into the environment to support students.
Date: Friday 21st March 2025
Time: 1.00-4.00
Follow Up Session
To finish the course all participants will come back together for a final, practical 0.5 day face to face session to share experiences and problem solve.

Online Support Sessions
There will be the opportunity to join 2 further online support sessions to troubleshoot and problem solve issues / questions as they arise. These sessions will take place during the autumn term 2025 and will incur an additional charge for participants who would like to join.
Dates: TBC
Timing: 2 x 1.5 hour online session
Tutors: This will be facilitated by 2 SLTs who specialise in working in schools.
Optional Consultancy Day
If a school would like a SaLT to provide onsite advice at any time during the programme this can be agreed as requested and would be quoted for accordingly.
