Makaton courses are a fun and practical way to learn how to use Makaton to support communication. They are aimed at anyone who needs to develop their skills at home or at work. Courses are divided into 4 levels. Each level consists of 2 modules and can be delivered as a whole day or split into shorter sessions. Each level is a stand-alone course, but participants must have attended the previous levels. The complete core vocabulary of signs and symbols will be taught over the 4 levels.
We also offer Makaton Taster sessions. A good choice to help you decide if you want to attend Makaton training.
These courses offer lots of opportunities to practise your skills in a friendly and supportive environment as well as tips for effective sign and symbol use at home or work.
This is a 1.5 hour introduction to Makaton.
You will learn a small vocabulary of around 30 every day signs and symbols plus another 12 which are more bespoke.
If you have a large staff team who all require this session, it can be run with groups of up to 20 people several times over a day.
Level 2 includes:
Further development of skills and knowledge from Level 1
Signs & symbols from Stages 3 and 4 and half of the additional stage from the Core Vocabulary (approximately 175 concepts)
Participants can choose to attend Level 2 only if they have already attended Level 1.
Level 1 includes:
A practical introduction to Makaton with discussion of commonly asked questions, hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use, and how to start using Makaton in everyday situations at home or work.
Signs & symbols from Stages 1 and 2, and half of the additional stage from the Core Vocabulary (approximately 175 concepts).
Participants can choose to attend Level 1 only or Levels 1 & 2 together.
Level 2 includes:
Further development of skills and knowledge from Level 1
Signs & symbols from Stages 3 and 4 and half of the additional stage from the Core Vocabulary (approximately 175 concepts)
Participants can choose to attend Level 2 only if they have already attended Level 1.
Level 3 includes:
This course revises what you have learnt on levels 1 & 2 and aims to improve and develop your sign and symbol use. You will learn stages 5 and 6 of the Makaton core vocabulary.
Participants can choose to attend Level 3 only if they have already attended Level 1 & 2.
Level 4 includes:
This course revises what you have learnt on levels 1, 2 & 3 and teaches you stages 7 and 8 of the Makaton core vocabulary. By the end of this level you will have learnt the complete core. vocabulary of signs and symbol
Participants can choose to attend Level 4 only if they have already attended Level 1, 2 & 3.

Dr Naomi Pearson qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist in 2000. She has worked in a variety of settings within the NHS before moving to independent practice. Naomi is the Managing Director at Speaking Space (Romsey) Ltd and has been a Makaton Tutor since 2010.
