Our Journey

At the heart of everything we do is a commitment to empowering individuals to lead fulfilling lives. Speaking Space’s vision, mission, and goals guide our journey as we create a supportive, inclusive environment where communication thrives and meaningful connections flourish.

Our History

Speaking Space was set up by Alex Kelly in 2009, a speech and language therapist who is best known for being the author of the Talkabout series. It started with a speech and language therapy contract in one local school, and has grown over the years to a team of therapists working in over 40 local schools.

Soon after the company started, Speaking Space day service was opened.  The day service is for autistic adults and adults with an intellectual disability who want to develop their communication skills in order to reach their life goals. Speaking Space moved to their current base in Romsey over 10 years ago and strives to promote inclusion and to empower those who have communication needs to be able to access the local community.

Speaking Space supported Romsey to become the first Makaton Friendly Town in the UK, and our members continue to engage in community projects to support local businesses to be more accessible for those with communication needs.
